Description
West Court is a house that dates from the mid-16th century and has later additions from the late 16th or early 17th century, as well as modifications from the 18th and 19th centuries. The front range, which is from the late 16th or early 17th century, is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a plain tile roof. It has two storeys set on a stone plinth and features a continuous bracketed jetty that wraps around the left end, supported by a dragon post. The roof is hipped to the right, with a 19th-century gable on the left that has projecting eaves, moulded bargeboards, and a finial. There is a rear stack towards the left end and a small projecting stack at the right end. The front has four timber-framed bays with irregular fenestration, including four 19th-century three-light casements. The central entrance features a 19th-century panelled door flanked by narrow half-glazed panels, all beneath a flat hood supported by carved brackets.
To the right, there is a rear wing from the mid-16th century, which is timber-framed and clad in brick, also with a plain-tile roof. This wing has two storeys on a plinth and a hipped roof to the rear, with a brick ridge stack at the centre and five timber-framed bays. To the left, there is another rear wing from the mid-to-late 18th century, which has a brick ground floor and light framing above, all rendered. This wing is one bay wide and runs parallel to the rear of the main block, with two storeys, jettied and gabled to the left to match the front range in the 19th century. There are minor 18th and 19th-century additions to the right end elevation of the entire house. The interior features exposed beams and posts. West Court is noted as the only remaining pre-19th-century manor house of three that once existed in the village.
