Description

The Lodge and Gatepiers attached consist of a pair of gatepiers, each flanked by a lodge, located at the grounds of Leeds Castle. They were built in the early 20th century. The lodges are constructed from roughly coursed stone with ashlar dressings and feature a plain tile roof. They are two storeys high, set on a plinth, and have a plat band and slightly coved stone cornice. Each lodge has a conical roof with a central stone stack. The front and gateway elevations have regular fenestration, with one two-light ovolo-moulded mullion window on each floor. The park elevations include a central first-floor window flanked by smaller two-light frieze windows, and two ground-floor windows without a central one. The central first-floor windows break through the eaves and are topped with deep horizontal stone pediments that are slightly corniced. Each lodge has a small rectangular ground-floor window next to the road side of the gates and features a ribbed door in a rectangular stone architrave, with a rectangular fanlight above. This door is located beneath the central window on the park side of the gates and is accessed by two steps with an iron handrail. Decorative rainwater heads are also present. The interiors have not been inspected. Each lodge is connected to its respective gatepier by an approximately six-foot stretch of wall. The gatepiers are rectangular stone structures with a moulded plinth, a corniced top, vertical fillets on each side, and a scroll between the pier and the wall. Each gatepier is topped with a gadrooned urn.
