Description
Little Moatenden is a late 16th or early 17th century farmhouse, now a house, located on the west side of Headcorn Road, East Sutton. It is timber-framed and was originally built at right angles to the road. The ground floor is faced with chequered red and grey brick, while the first floor is tile-hung, with a plain tile roof. The building has a lobby entry plan and originally comprised five bays, including a central stack bay that had a continuous jetty to the north. A further bay was later added to the west. The house is two storeys and has an attic, built on a brick plinth.
The south elevation has a hipped roof to the left with a gablet. There is a multiple brick ridge stack positioned off-centre to the right, and a brick stack to the left end. A skylight is also present. The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring four leaded casements: two 2-light windows to the left, a 4-light window in a rectangular first-floor bay with a tile-hung base, and a single 4-light window towards the right end. A panelled door is situated beneath the stack, sheltered by an open timber porch.
The interior retains exposed timber framing. A moulded 4-centred arched stone fireplace is found in the right-hand first-floor room, while a chamfered brick fireplace is in the left-hand room. A corridor, believed to be original, runs along the north wall of the first floor, featuring close-studded partition work and evidence of a doorway to the east end room, with a possible further doorway to the ground floor. The roof structure includes aligned butt-side purlins with curved windbraces and raked queen-struts. Some 19th or early 20th century timber-framed alterations have been made to the north side of the property.
