Description

Little Tilden is a farmhouse, dating from the mid-15th century or earlier, with additions from the 19th or 20th century. The structure is timber framed with plaster infilling, and incorporates ground floor sections built in red and grey brick, and red brick in stretcher bond. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is of a Wealden design, originally comprising 4 timber-framed bays with slightly unequal-length hall bays, and later extended to the left. The house is two storeys high with an attic. It features broadly-spaced studding, arch braces, and tension braces. The left end bay of the Wealden section is jettied, supported by solid brackets and featuring spandrel braces to a flying wallplate and a central tie. The roof is hipped, with a gablet to the right. A brick stack is located at the rear of the added left end bay, while multiple brick stacks rise from the right end of the left hall bay and at the right end of the building. A dormer window is present on the right hip. The windows are irregular in arrangement, with five casements: one 4-light, two 3-light, and two 2-light. A 20th-century ribbed door and surround are located at the left end of the left hall bay, and a 20th-century lean-to is attached to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
