Description
Tilden is a farmhouse dating from the 15th century or early 16th century, with alterations from the 16th century. It is timber framed with plaster infilling, and the right gable end is made of painted brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has a Wealden design of four timber-framed bays, converted to a lobby entry plan with a continuous jetty. It has two storeys and a garret, featuring a continuous jetty supported by solid brackets, which returns to the left on a moulded dragon post. The structure is close studded and has remains of a moulded fillet halfway up the first floor. The roof is steeply pitched, hipped to the left and half-hipped to the right, with a central brick ridge stack. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of four widely spaced windows: two small single-light casements, one two-light casement, and one eight-light mullioned and transomed window that breaks through the eaves, topped with an eyebrow dormer. There is also a three-light wooden mullioned frieze window with subsidiary mullions. A ribbed door is located beneath the stack. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to contain a moulded crown post and the Warham arms in stained glass.
