Description

This barn, located about 50 metres north-west of Old Timbers, dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with later additions from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, standing on a stone plinth, and features a plain tile roof. The original structure consists of three timber-framed bays from the late 16th or early 17th century, with a central midstrey. A later 17th-century bay was added to the right, and two 18th-century bays were added to the left, all under a hipped roof.

At the front, there is a low weatherboarded porch with a hipped roof and double doors, along with a single rear door. To the right, there is a single-storey weatherboarded addition with a hipped roof, and to the left, there is another single-storey addition. A lean-to is positioned to the left of the porch and towards the right end of the barn.

Inside, the late 16th or early 17th-century section features chamfered gunstock-jowled posts, arch-braced tie-beams, and a clasped purlin roof with diminishing principal rafters. It has vertical queen-struts to the collars and windbraces only in the midstrey bay, with one tension brace above the midrail in each bay. The later 17th-century bay has a clasped-purlin common-rafter roof. The left gable-end wall-plates and tie-beams are in the same plane, with unjowled posts and a clasped-purlin roof with diminishing principal rafters and no queen struts in the two left bays. Old Timbers is not listed.
