Description

Bishops Oast is a mid-19th century oast house, now used as a domestic dwelling. It is located on the south-west side of Bishops Lane in Hunton. The main stowage is constructed of red brick in English bond, with weatherboarding to the gable ends. The kilns are built of red brick in Flemish bond. The stowage has a slate roof, while the kilns have plain tile roofs.

The stowage is rectangular and set at a right angle to the road, with three circular kilns on each of its long sides, set back from the gable ends. The stowage is three storeys high, and the kilns are now two storeys high. A cogged brick eaves cornice is present on the kilns. The stowage roof is hipped at the front and rear, and the kilns have conical roofs with cowls.

Windows consist of one 2-light casement with a segmental head on each floor, on each side of the stowage, between the kilns and the front gable end. There’s also one 2-light casement per storey towards the front of each front kiln. Vertical louvred strips now replace the former central loading doors at the centre of each upper floor of the gable end of the stowage. The former second-floor door is flanked by broad 2-light louvres, and the first-floor door is flanked by 20th-century 2-light casements. Garage doors are situated on the ground floor. Boarded doors are found on each front kiln, at the angle with the stowage. The interior has not been inspected.
