Description
The Swan Public House is a public house dating from the 15th century, with a facade from the 19th century. It features a timber-framed structure, with the ground floor clad in painted brick and the left end of the ground floor rendered. The first floor is weatherboarded, and the building has a plain tile roof. It has an open hall consisting of two timber-framed bays, with a storeyed bay at each end, possibly indicating a Wealden design. The building stands two storeys high with a cellar on an irregular plinth and has a continuous jetty that steps up across the two central bays. The roof is steeply pitched and hipped to the right, with a hip returning to a lower ridge over the left end bay. There are rear stacks located at the left end and at the back of the right hall bay. The fenestration is irregular, featuring four casements: a two-light window in the left bay, three-light windows in each of the central bays, and a four-light window in the slightly broader right bay. The ground floor includes 19th-century canted bays. There are four doors: one panelled door leading up five steps to the right end of the left bay, one half-glazed door at each end of the left hall bay leading up five steps and four steps respectively, and another half-glazed door leading up two steps to the right end of the right hall bay. A rear return wing has been added to the right. The interior has only been partly inspected but features exposed framing, hollow-chamfered beams, and a doorhead with solid spandrels.
