Description
This is a row of estate workers’ cottages, built in the mid-19th century. They have been converted into a house row and stand on the south side of High Street, Lenham. The cottages are constructed of ragstone with a plain tile roof. The central range is flanked by two projecting gabled cross-wings, one at the left end and the other towards the right end. The main range is of three storeys, while the cross-wings are of two storeys. Four brick ridge stacks are visible, along with a fifth at the rear. All gables, on both the front and side elevations, feature lobed bargeboards and pendants. Each cross-wing has a single 3-light mullioned window on the first floor. The main range has four gabled dormers, two towards each end, each containing a 2-light mullioned window. There are 20th-century half-glazed doors: one in the right-side elevation of the left cross-wing (serving No. 67), a pair adjacent to each other towards the centre of the main range (serving Nos. 69 and 71), and a ribbed door in the angle between the right-side elevation of the right wing and the front elevation of the right end of the main range (serving No. 73). The cottages were originally part of the Chilston estate. The interiors were not inspected at the time of listing.
