Description
Bedmonton House is a house with origins that may date back to the 17th or 18th century, although it has been refenestrated in the 19th and 20th centuries. The front range of the house is from the early 19th century and features a T-shaped plan. The older rear section is constructed of painted brick and has a hipped old tiled roof with one ridge and one external red brick chimney stack. The house is two storeys high with irregular fenestration, including two 19th-century sash windows that have verticals only, while most other windows are 20th-century casements fitted into earlier openings. The front door is from the 20th century. The eaves cornice has modillions, and there are S-shaped iron ties. The crossbar of the T is an early 19th-century range made of painted brick, featuring a hipped slate roof and three stock brick chimney stacks on the rear slope. This section is also two storeys tall and has three windows, with sashes that include glazing bars; the outer windows are tripartite. The central doorcase is adorned with an open pediment supported by pilasters, a semi-circular fanlight, and a six-panelled door, accessed by three stone steps. The name Bedmonton was first recorded as Bedemantune in the 13th century.
