Description
Swanton Old House is a Grade II listed building dating from around 1579. It features a close-studded and ornamental braced timber frame, which is exposed with plaster infill, topped by a plain tile roof. The house has four bays and a lobby entry, standing two storeys tall with a continuous first floor jetty. The roof is hipped with a gablet on the right side, and there are stacks located to the centre left and projecting end right. The windows are irregularly arranged, with four wood mullioned windows on the first floor and three on the ground floor. A 20th-century plank door with side lights is set in an original 4-centre arched doorway to the centre left. Inside, the door-heads of the lobby doors are initialed WT and AT, indicating that William and Anne Terrey were married in 1579. There is also a contemporary brick-lined cellar. The house was used for a time as Poor Cottages.
