Description
This house dates to the 15th century and is timber-framed with plaster infilling and a plain tile roof. It is a Wealden house, originally with a hall divided into two roughly equal bays, the right end bay having been subdivided to indicate a cross passage. The house sits on a stone plinth and has a small undercroft to its left end. The right and left end bays are jettied, with the jetties featuring simple dragon posts. The front elevation, left gable end, and rear wall of the left end bay are close studded, while the right gable end and rear of the hall have broadly spaced studding with tension braces. Architectural details include chamfered arch-braces to a molded flying wall-plate and a solid bracket beneath a central tie. The roof is hipped with a gablet to the right. There are projecting ragstone stacks: one to the left end with a chamfered plinth and a red brick flue, and another in the front slope of the roof towards the right end of the hall. The original leaded casement windows are irregular in placement and retain their original cills. A small rectangular stone window with a chamfered architrave and iron grille is located towards the left end of the undercroft. A ribbed door within a chamfered architrave, featuring a replaced four-centred arched head with hollow spandrels, leads up four steps at the right end of the hall. A ribbed door to the undercroft, set within a two-centred arched chamfered stone architrave, descends five steps at the right end of the left bay of the hall. A lean-to is attached to the rear of the right end bay. Inside, features include two four-centred arched service doors with molded architraves, a plain rear stair door, a central truss with a chamfered brace, a molded inner cill to the rear hall window, and a stone base to a stack backing onto the cross passage. The interior was only partly inspected.
