Description
The building is a stable complex located about 30 metres north-west of Chilston Park, dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, with some 19th-century additions. It is constructed from roughly coursed blocks of galleted stone, featuring red brick dressings, with a 19th-century range made entirely of red brick and a plain tile roof. The overall layout is an irregular U-shape.
The west range was rebuilt in the 19th century and consists of one storey and an attic, set on a stone plinth. The roof is hipped at the south end of the east wing and includes five hipped dormers with leaded lights facing the courtyard, as well as two dormers with moulded cornices on the short east wing. The long north elevation has four blocked doorways, while the east side features two double doors. There are also three boarded doors with rectangular fanlights leading to the courtyard on the south side, along with external stairs leading to the attic.
The 19th-century range has coped gable ends and a central gabled porch with flanking pilasters, which houses a series of round-headed double doors. At the south end of the east wing, there is a mounting block consisting of five stone steps, which incorporates part of a re-used early 16th-century stone fireplace adorned with the Hussey arms in the spandrels.
