Description

Oxley House is a late 18th or early 19th century house, formerly the bailiff’s house for the Chilston estate. It has 19th-century additions to the rear (north) elevation. The house is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The 19th-century additions feature tile hanging on the first floor. It has a plain tiled roof and brick chimneystacks at each end. The house has two storeys, an attic and a basement. The south (front) elevation has three regularly spaced windows, each with a 16-pane sash in an open box. There is a brick dentil eaves cornice and a raised plat band. Segmental brick arches are above the ground floor windows. The central door is a 6-panelled door with a flat weatherhood above it. There are two hipped dormers. The north elevation includes 19th-century casement windows and a 20th-century wooden porch.

An attached granary is located at the rear and is weatherboarded with a hipped, plain tiled roof.

The interior retains much original joinery, including a stick staircase with a column newel. The right-hand front room retains simple pine panelling to dado height, a chimney piece, an overmantel, and arched china recesses with serpentine shelves. Another room has an open fireplace with a moulded wooden bressumer, two cupboards, a brick hearth, and a four-panelled door with a spyhole. On the first floor, two rooms have wooden surrounds to fireplaces and cupboards, some with L-hinges and cast iron firegrates. The cellar has cambered alcoves.
