Description

The Old Post Office and Forge Cottage are a pair of houses dating from the early and later 18th century. The ground floor is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern. The first floor of the left-hand section has exposed framing of thin timber pieces, with a rendered infill between. The first floor of the right-hand section is tile-hung. The houses are two storeys high, with a garret in the right-hand section, which also has lower eaves and a lower ridgeline. The left-hand section has a half-hipped roof sloping to the right and left, while the right-hand section has a hipped roof sloping to the right. A central brick chimney stack rises from the ridge of the left-hand section, and a central rear chimney stack is present in the right-hand section. The windows are irregularly placed and number three in total. The left-hand section includes two two-light leaded casement windows. The right-hand section has a single 12-pane sash window. A single-storey red brick addition with a half-hipped roof projects from the left-hand end, and contains a ribbed door leading into the Old Post Office. A blocked door exists below the stack on the left-hand section. A panelled door to Forge Cottage is positioned at the left end of the right-hand section and has a consoled broken-based triangular pediment above it. A rendered and tile-hung lean-to extends to the right-hand side. A rear lean-to is present on the left-hand section. The interior of the buildings has not been inspected.
