Description
Aylmer House and the house adjoining to the left are located on Tumblers Hill in Sutton Valence. This building, now part of a school, dates from the early 16th century or earlier. It features a timber frame, is rendered, and has a plain tile roof. The structure is designed in the Wealden style, consisting of a single hall bay, with storeyed bays at each end and a narrow bay, possibly added later, at the right end. The building has two storeys and a cellar. The right and left end bays project outwards on slender solid brackets, with the narrow right end bay having a higher jetty. Small solid brackets support the flying wall-plate. There are corbelled brick ridge stacks towards each end of the building. The fenestration is irregular, consisting of four casements: one four-light window in each principal jettied bay, a three-light oriel window on a single bracket in the central bay, and another three-light window in the right end bay. A boarded door is located towards the right end of the left bay, accessible by four steps, and there is a ribbed door leading to Aylmer House at the narrow right end bay.
