Description

Marden Farm Shop is a building that likely served as a courthouse and possibly a market, now functioning as a shop. It probably dates from the 16th century, with alterations made in the late 17th or early 18th century and the 19th century. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, featuring exposed corner posts and a plain tile roof. It is nearly square, consisting of two timber-framed bays, and is situated at right angles to Howland Road on an island site at the end of the High Street. The building is a single storey, raised on a stone plinth, and has a pyramidal roof.

The front elevation facing Howland Road includes an eight-pane shop window with thin glazing bars, along with two six-pane windows on the right side. There is a half-glazed door positioned on the right side of the front elevation. Inside, the building showcases exposed framing, with short shaped jowls on the principal posts and dragon ties at the corners. The roof features clasped purlins, and each rafter has a mortice at the same height towards the apex. Curved arch-braces are present on the left side wall and part of the gable ends. The right side wall-plate and short returns along each gable end are morticed for a continuous row of diamond mullions, with some remaining in place, apparently terminating at the midrail. The building is located on a road island site, where it is said that a Court Leet was held until the 19th century.
