Description
This is a late 17th-century house and shop row, with alterations and a new facade dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and comprises three sections. The ground floor is built of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, while the first floor is clad in banded plain and fishscale tiles. Timber framing is exposed on the right side of the passage leading to the former number 3. The roof is covered in plain tiles, with brick ridge stacks positioned towards the left and right ends.
The fenestration is irregular, featuring three sixteen-pane sash windows on each floor. A half-glazed door serves as the entrance to John's Hairdresser on the left, a panelled door with a rectangular three-light fanlight leads to Marsida on the right, adjacent to a passage to the former number 3, and another half-glazed door provides access to the late 19th or early 20th century shop front of The Old Sweet Shop at the right end.
Two short rear wings extend to the rear, with their roofs hipped.
A partial inspection of the interior of The Old Sweet Shop revealed chamfered cross and axial beams on both floors, a large shaped jowl and straight tension brace to the rear corner post, and a clasped-purlin roof.
