Description

Cornerways is a house, originally a shop, dating from the early to mid-17th century with alterations made in the 19th century. The house is timber-framed with rendered infilling. The right gable end has two floors with weatherboarding, and the gable is tile-hung. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has two timber-framed bays and a narrow stack bay. It is two storeys high, with a garret. The left bay has largely renewed close studding and two tension braces, while the right bay has broadly-spaced studding and one tension brace. A jettied gable is on the left side, featuring moulded bargeboards and a pendant. The eaves of the right gable end are jettied on shaped brackets, with the roof half-hipped above. A brick stack is located to the right of the centre. The fenestration is irregular, with three windows: one three-light casement to the left bay, one single-light leaded casement to the right, and a small four-light diamond-mullion window under the eaves. A tall boarded loading door is visible on the right gable. A similar loading door is on the first floor, flanked by one three-light and one single-light ovolo-moulded mullion window. A ribbed door with a rectangular light is towards the left end of the front elevation, with a bowed multipane former shop window to the right, both under a plain frieze. A lean-to extends from the left end of the front elevation, returning along the left gable end. A short, two-storey rear wing, weatherboarded and with a hipped plain-tile roof, is located to the left. A rear lean-to is also present on the right. The interior has not been inspected.
