Description
Styles is a late 18th-century house, which may have originally been cottages. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with a plain tile roof. The building consists of two timber-framed bays and stands two storeys tall on a rendered plinth. It features a hipped roof and has a broad projecting stack with a rendered base and brick flue located at the right gable end. The windows are arranged irregularly, with two three-light casements on the upper floor and two similar windows on the ground floor. A boarded door is situated to the right of centre, accessed by four steps. At the rear, there is a lean-to with a rendered base and a weatherboarded gable.
Inside, the house has chamfered principal posts with long cut jowls, chamfered tie-beams, and wall-plates. The roof structure includes clasped purlins with diminishing principal rafters and curved tension braces on the rear first-floor wall. There is a chamfered ground-floor beam and a stair trimmer in the rear left corner. The ground-floor fireplace is made of broad red and grey bricks, featuring a bevelled bressumer and a blocked bread oven, while a 19th-century grate is found on the first floor. The rear first-floor wall has hair plaster infilling with a pricked pattern. Styles was formerly known as Forge Cottage.
