Description

This is a row of houses located on the north-east side of Benover Road in Yalding. The left end of the row may have originally served a special purpose. The right section dates from the late 18th or early 19th century, while the left section has a late 18th or early 19th century facade but may incorporate an earlier core.

The left section is constructed with red brick in a Flemish bond pattern on the ground floor and tile hanging on the first floor. The right section is built with chequered red and grey brick on both floors. The roof is covered with plain tiles and features half-hipped ends. There is a brick stack in the front slope of the roof to the left of the centre, a rear stack to the right of the centre, and a projecting red and grey brick gable end stack to the right. Five small hipped dormers are set into the roof.

The windows are small wooden casements. The left end has no windows; the left section has two three-light windows flanking the left stack, and the right section has one three-light window and two two-light windows with segmental heads. Segmental heads are also present on the ground-floor casements of both sections. A boarded door within an architrave with a pulvinated frieze and modillioned cornice leads to Bridge Cottage, approached by three steps to the front of the left gable end. A blocked doorway, now containing a two-light casement, is located between the left stack and the left end. Further doors are located under the left stack (leading to No. 1), to the left end of the right section (leading to No. 2), and a pair of half-glazed doors between the central and right windows of the right section (leading to Nos. 3 and 4). Each door is approached by two or three steps and has a flat, projecting hood; the hoods for Nos. 3 and 4 are continuous. A rear lean-to extends along the entire length of the row.

The interior of No. 2 was partially inspected and revealed softwood axial beams, a steep rear staircase, and a roof with staggered butt purlins.
