Description
Sandgate Castle is a Grade I listed building located on Castle Road in Sandgate. It was built between 1539 and 1540 as part of a series of defensive structures that included Sandown, Deal, and Walmer Castles. The castle was altered for defensive purposes again in 1805. Originally, it featured a large central tower surrounded by three smaller towers, all connected by a curtain wall and covered galleries. There was also an outer curtain wall and a gate-tower to the north, along with a rectangular building linking the gate-tower to the central tower.
In the 1805 alterations, the tops of the towers were removed, and the central tower was converted into a Martello tower. Materials from the removed sections were used to fill the space between the inner and outer walls. Much of the outer wall is missing on the south side, likely destroyed during the Second World War, and modern pill-boxes have been built in some areas where the wall once stood.
Sandgate Castle is in private ownership and forms part of a group with nearby buildings, including The Hermitage, York Cottage, and Gatepiers to the White Lodge, as well as Nos 12 to 16 (even), which are considered of local interest.
