Description

York Cottage is likely an 18th-century building that was refaced in the mid-19th century. Local tradition suggests that the mother of Sir John Moore resided at the cottage during his command at Shorncliffe Camp. The building is two storeys high and constructed of painted brick, with a tiled roof featuring three hipped dormers and an eaves cornice. The first floor has four cambered sash windows, one round-headed and one three-light. The ground floor features a contemporary projection containing two cambered sash windows, one of which is three-light, a pedimented doorcase, and a carriage entrance on the right side. There is also a round-headed doorcase on the left side. York Cottage forms a group with buildings at numbers 2, 12 to 16 (even), and associated gate piers, all of which are considered to be of local interest.
