Description

This is a mid-19th century public house, formerly known as the Fleur de Lis, located on Sandgate High Street. The front of the building is two storeys high and has a stuccoed exterior. It features a hipped slate roof and three sash windows without glazing bars. The ground floor has a central, three-light, cambered window, and two doorcases, each with a rectangular fanlight.

The rear section of the building is said to have been an office used for paying the troops who constructed Sandgate Castle around 1540. This part is single-storied, stuccoed, and has a hipped roof covered in old tiles, with an end chimneybreast. The rear section contains sash windows with vertical glazing bars only.

The building contributes to the group value alongside numbers 25 to 29 (odd). Numbers 23 to 39 (odd) also form a group with the cottage at the rear of number 39, along with numbers 41 to 65 (odd), including 43A, 45A and 55A, and number 61. Numbers 31 to 37 are noted as buildings of local interest.
