Description

The Folkestone Memorial Cairn is a monument located at the west end of the Road of Remembrance, about 30 meters from the main Folkestone war memorial. It stands approximately 1.5 meters tall with a square cross-section and is designed as a cairn that tapers upwards, constructed from stone road setts. The cairn features a shallow pyramidal stone cap.

On the south face of the cairn, there is a bronze plaque inscribed with a quote from Tennyson: "NOT ONCE OR TWICE IN OUR ROUGH ISLAND STORY / THE PATH OF DUTY WAS THE WAY TO GLORY." The plaque also includes the words "ROAD / OF / REMEMBRANCE," flanked by the dates 1914 and 1918. It commemorates the tens of thousands of British soldiers who passed along this road during the Great War on their way to and from the battlefields of Europe. The inscription continues, "AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN / AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM," along with the phrase "ROSEMARY FOR REMEMBRANCE."

Additionally, a second plaque has been added below the first, which states that "THE ROSEMARY BED / WAS PLANTED BY / SOROPTIMISTS INTERNATIONAL / FOLKESTONE / TO COMMEMORATE / THEIR 25TH ANNIVERSARY / 1965-1990."
