Description
Mittell House is a house dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, originally serving as the end of a hall-house, with the rear wall of the hall. It features a 17th-century ceiling in the former hall, a 17th-century outshot, staircase, and cellar, and was refronted in the mid 19th century. The building is timber-framed, with the front clad in stock brick laid in Flemish bond, a slate roof, and end brick chimneystacks. The left side is partly stuccoed with incised lines to imitate masonry, while the rear elevation is tile hung. The front roof is slate, and the rear has a steeply-pitched tiled roof. The house has two storeys and attics in the gable end, with three windows. The front features two 6-pane sashes on the first floor, two 12-pane sashes on the ground floor, and a central doorcase with a round-headed fanlight. To the right is an adjoining 19th-century coach house made of brown brick with a tiled roof and a casement window. The left side includes one 19th-century casement and an attic window, as well as a ground floor lean-to with a casement. The rear has two large hipped dormers and a 20th-century brick extension. Inside, the house retains two 4-centred service doors, a roll-moulded beam, a curved brace, and a 17th-century ceiling in the lounge with a bridging beam, lamb's tongue stops, and floor joists. There is a plank door on the ground floor, and the dining room features a chamfered beam, likely from the 18th century. The cellar includes a round-headed niche, and there is a winder staircase. The first floor shows visible 17th-century rafters.
