Description
The Ship Hotel is a building primarily from the 18th century, although the northeast end may be older. It has two storeys and attics, featuring two hipped dormers. The rear of the building, which faces Church Road, is constructed of red brick, while the front facing High Street has been covered in stucco. The two easternmost window bays project slightly. The roof is tiled, hipped at the northeast end and half hipped at the southwest end. Long and short quoins are present at the angles of the eastern section and at the southwest end of the rest of the building, which also has a brick modillion eaves cornice with bricks inserted diagonally, causing the points to protrude. There are seven sash windows set in surrounds, although the glazing bars are missing. A later doorcase features pilasters and a projecting cornice supported on consoles. To the west of the doorway, there is a 19th-century public house front. No 85 Church Road is part of a group with The Ship Hotel.
