Description
The building, originally the Harvey Grammar School and later used as a clinic, was constructed in 1882 to a design by Robert Wheeler, built in a Vernacular Revival style. It is constructed of yellow and red brick, with some areas of pointed tile-hanging, stone window dressings, and a tiled roof. The building comprises a single-storey school block and a two-storey and attic Master’s house, linked by a prominent bell tower. The school rooms are of yellow brick with red brick dressings, with gable ends featuring bands of pointed tiles and yellow brick. It has a tiled roof with ridge tiles, and four stone mullioned and transomed windows separated by buttresses.
A tall bell tower, also of yellow brick with red brick dressings, is centrally positioned on the south-east front. It has three stages, with recessed panels containing narrow slit windows. The bellstage has cinquefoil-headed arches, and the square spire is banded with alternating plain and pointed tiles, topped with a metal weathervane. A four-centred arched stone entrance is reached by a flight of York stone steps with a brick and stone balustrade. Attached to the north-east is the Master’s lodging, with a red brick ground floor, a yellow brick first floor, and a pointed tile-hung attic floor. It has a tiled roof with three tall clustered brick chimneystacks, an overhanging timber-framed gable with plaster infill, wooden bargeboards, and a four-light oriel window. Mullioned windows are present on all fronts, and a gabled brick weatherporch with a pointed tiled roof is on the south-eastern front.
The school rooms originally included a large schoolroom measuring approximately 50 feet by 25 feet, alongside two additional classrooms. The Master’s house contained bedrooms for the Master and Assistant Master, dormitories for the boys, and servants’ accommodation.
