Description
The Anchor Inn and rear courtyard is a public house that dates back to the 16th century and earlier, with rebuilding in the 18th century. The building features a timber frame clad in painted brick and render, and it has been extended with painted brick. The roof is plain tiled and has been constructed in at least four phases. The structure is one storey and attic on a plinth, with two storeys on the right. The roof is hipped on the right and steps down three times to the left, featuring two hipped dormers on the left side. There are stacks at the end right, centre right, and end left.
The windows are arranged irregularly, with two glazing bar sashes on the right side of the first floor. The central area has four 19th-century plate glass windows, along with a transomed window and a half-glazed door ensemble to the centre right, which is topped with a fascia on pilasters. There are also half-glazed doors to the left and at the end right. The central single-storey block likely represents the remains of a hall house that was extended to the left and rear in the 16th century, rebuilt to the right around 1700, and altered in the early 19th century.
At the rear, there is a courtyard that includes a two-storey stable block made of red brick with a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped and features loft doors. This stable block is connected to the main building by a late 19th-century two-storey block that is weather boarded and has a slate roof, along with a ground floor pentice.
