Description
54 and 55 High Street is a pair of houses dating from the 15th century. They are timber framed and rendered, topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has a Wealden hall house plan and stands two storeys high with an attic. It features a hipped roof with gablets, a gabled dormer, and chimney stacks on the centre left and rear right. On the first floor, there are two wooden casement windows, while the ground floor has four windows and a canted bay on the centre right. There are boarded doors on both the left and right sides, along with outshots at each end. Inside, there is evidence of a crown post roof with smoke blackening, and there may have been a jetty into the hall, suggesting that one end was rebuilt. The right end has a jettied section dating to around 1550.
