Description

Wickhurst is a house built in the early 20th century, designed in the Cape Dutch style. It features painted brickwork and a grey pantiled roof. The building has two storeys with box eaves and stepped shaped gables, and chimney stacks on both the left and right sides. The front has a regular arrangement of four metal casements on each floor, complete with shutters, and smaller casements positioned in round-headed recesses on the ground floor to the centre left and centre right. The central entrance door consists of three moulded panels and includes a fretwork spy-hole, topped by a flat hood supported by enriched brackets and a central monkish corbel.

There are projecting single-storey hipped wings on both the left and right sides, with the left wing being part of a garage court and featuring a returned extension from the main range. The right wing includes glazed French doors and metal casements. The front garden is enclosed by a painted wall approximately six feet high, topped with pantiled coping. It has a central hipped gateway that includes a keyed semi-circular opening with a wrought iron gate and an overthrow. The walls of the garden sweep forward to connect with the ends of the side walls that project from the side wings.

Inside, the house boasts beamed ceilings and original fittings. Although M.H. Baillie-Scott designed in this style, the documented house by him at Sandwich Bay has been destroyed. The architect of Wickhurst is unknown.
