Description

The site of the Sandown Gate is located on Sandown Road. There is currently no visible evidence of the medieval gate that once stood here, as it was demolished in 1781. However, a painting of the gate can be found in the Guildhall, and it is mentioned in Boyes' History of Sandwich, published in 1793. In front of the gate is a bridge that spans the moat, constructed of three brick arches, each two bricks thick, with the center arch flanked by smaller arches. A buttress on the south side shows signs of fractures from traffic. The bridge, complete with its parapet, dates from around 1650 to 1675. The moat at this location has silted up, and the piers are nearly buried beneath made-up ground. Some stonework from the town wall, which was connected to the medieval gate, is visible just beneath the grass.
