Description

The Salutation is a Grade I listed building designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1912, showcasing Queen Anne style. It features two storeys, an attic, and a semi-basement, constructed from red brick with long and short stone quoins. A stone stringcourse runs along the building, and there is a coved wooden eaves cornice beneath a hipped tiled roof. The façade includes sash windows with glazing bars, with the entrance front displaying seven windows. The three central window bays project and are accented by quoins at the corners. There are two hipped dormers, with the central one topped by a pediment. The stone doorway features a broken curved pediment and is accessed by a flight of 11 wide steps with a handrail.

On the garden front, there are six windows, with a sundial centrally located below a stone panel adorned with swags and festoons of fruit. This side also has four dormers and a wide flight of steps leading up to the three central window bays. The south side has five windows and three dormers, along with another stone panel featuring similar decorative fruit swags. The interior boasts panelling that is said to have been salvaged from a demolished building in St James, London. The gardens were designed by Gertrude Jekyll. The Salutation, along with Salutation Cottage, the gateway, and outbuildings, form a cohesive group.
