Description
No. 42 Strand Street is a house dating from the late 15th century to the early 16th century. The exterior is finished in stucco, and it has a plain tile roof that features a hip on the front elevation. The building stands three storeys high and consists of one bay. On the ground floor, there is a sash window, while the first floor has a 20th-century two-light casement window with a transom and mullions, positioned beneath the head of an original two-light oriel window that has a sawn-off mullion. The second floor features a three-light transomed window. At the rear, there is a cross-wing that is set at right angles to the main structure. Inside, timber framing is visible on the upper floors, and there is a ground floor beam with brattishing set into the party wall. The roof includes a crown-post collar-purlin structure, and some of the interior features late 17th century to early 18th century panelling.
