Description
The Swedish Dance Theatre, located to the northwest of St Albans Court, is a gymnasium built in 1938 by Joyce Adburgham for the English Gymnastic Society. This timber building is constructed from white deal with internal wall board lining and features an external facing of Western Red Cedar weatherboarding, shiplap, and logsiding on diagonal sheathing of Swedish red pine.
The interior showcases a Lamella roof made of British Columbia pine, which is exposed against a field of tongued and grooved roof boards that were originally painted blue. The building has seven bays on the northwest and southeast side elevations, with four-light window strips containing small panes in the five inner bays. Triangular buttresses are faced with diagonal boarding and are located below a deep cornice made up of seven bands of horizontal boarding. There is a timber projection along the northwest elevation.
At the northeast end, there is a flat-roofed single-storey kitchen and changing room wing that is horizontally boarded, along with a flat-roofed vertically boarded gallery wing set back above it. The southwest gable features a wide shaped end gable of horizontal boarding and a canted bay with eight narrow window strips that rise to eaves level, topped with a horizontally boarded cornice strip.
Inside, the southwest canted bay was originally furnished with a movable stage, while the northeast spectator gallery has a recent stage below it. The changing rooms still retain ceiling panels faced with lozenge-shaped boarding.
