Description
Caretakers Cottage and Stable Court at St Albans Court was built around 1875 by George Devey. The cottage features a ragstone ground floor and a brick upper floor with a diaper pattern, accented by limestone dressings. It stands two storeys high, topped with a pyramidal roof that has moulded brick eaves and a weather vane. The southwest elevation includes a two-light stone mullioned window with dripstones above and below, which is placed asymmetrically. The northwest elevation has a similar first-floor window located north of the stable archway. The northeast, or entrance elevation, features another two-light window above a four-centred arched doorway.
To the left, there is a single-storey wing with a two-light window on the left and a 20th-century window set below on the right. A higher wing extends at right angles to the northeast, showcasing a brick gable. The archway, also designed by Devey, is constructed of stone and brick, featuring machicolation and a parapet. It has a wide moulded four-centred stone arch with a central dripstone, flanked by narrow moulded stone archways. To the right of the archway, a flight of stairs leads to a shaped gable with a clock face dated 1775, which is part of the original stable court dating back to around 1721.
To the west, there are arcaded single-storey 19th-century stable ranges that have been converted into art studios, featuring a recessed entry in the re-entrant angle and a projecting stack on the right. At the rear of the courtyard, there is a brick wall that originally enclosed a walled garden, complete with a classical gateway made of stone with red brick piers and a scrolled pediment, featuring a wrought iron gate dated 1869. This wall extends beyond and includes sections that date back to the 16th or 17th century.
