Description
Old St Albans Court is a house dated 1556, with extensions made around 1876 by George Devey. It features red brick in English bond and timber framing with plaster infill, topped by a plain tiled roof. The south front has one and two storeys, with a crow-stepped gable on the left and stacks projecting from the left, centre, and right. To the right, there is a two-storey canted bay window accompanied by a 19th-century timbered and jettied range that returns to the rear. A rib and stud door and a four-centred archway are located to the right of the bay window. The central part of the building includes a battlemented tower. At the rear right, there is a jettied range with an offset stack, a rib and stud door, and a projecting first-floor outshot supported by posts. The right side has mid-19th-century brick extensions. The house was built for the Hammond family in both 1556 and 1876, and a datestone has been reset in the wall at the rear. There is a projecting wall to the left that connects with the stable courtyard, which dates from the 16th century and was repaired in the mid-19th century. This wall is about 12 feet high, featuring a plinth, coping, and a four-centred archway to the right.
