Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church dating from the 12th century, with a south porch and vestry added in 1857, and an apse completed in 1861 by Arthur Ashpitel. The building is constructed of flint, with the south nave wall rendered, and features a plain tiled roof. The nave and chancel have small round-headed lancet windows, with 19th-century round-headed lights inserted. The apse includes a triple round-headed window that is a copy of one from Barfrestone. The north nave windows are adorned with interlacing strapwork surrounds and there is a grotesque head with pebble eyes reset on the south porch. The bellcote from 1857 has been truncated, and a 13th-century bell is now hung directly on the west wall.
The north doorway features nook shafts with scalloped and scrolled capitals, a nailhead outer order, and a tympanum with diagonal and pinhead moulding, topped with a wooden lintel. The interior originally consists of a simple two-cell layout. The south doorway has a carved head keystone, while the chancel arch is supported by renewed billet moulded inposts with a grotesque head keystone that has black pebbles for eyes. The nave has a trussed rafter roof, and the chancel features a crenellated wooden barrel roof. The apsidal sanctuary has an arch similar to the chancel arch, also designed by Ashpitel in 1861, and the apse includes a seven-bay blind arcade.
Notable fittings include 19th-century poppy head choir stalls from St. Margaret's in Canterbury, and a 17th-century pulpit with richly decorated arcaded sides, strapwork top panels, and a modillion cornice on the top rail, complete with a triple scrolled book rest. The base of the pulpit has been renewed.
