Description

Mistletoe Cottage is an early 18th century estate cottage located on Canterbury Road in Bilting. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a peg-tiled roof that is hipped at one end and gabled at the other, topped with a brick chimneystack. The cottage is a two-bay, two-storey building with a basement and has two windows. The front elevation, which now faces away from the road, includes two three-light wooden casements set in 18th century pegged architraves, although the casements themselves are later additions. The ground floor windows have cambered head linings, and there is a central doorcase with a cambered head leading to a modern door.

On the left side, there is a 19th century cambered casement and a modern gabled and tiled weatherhood. The rear features an integral outshot with a catslide roof and four mainly modern casements. Inside, the cottage has a cellar with a paved floor and a reused 17th century plank door. The outshot, which was formerly a dairy, and the living room both have brick floors. The living room is highlighted by a brick inglenook fireplace with a wooden bressumer that has a 1¼ inch chamfered beam with lamb's tongue stops and a salt niche. The spine beam features a 1 inch chamfer with lamb's tongue stops, and the floor joists are also chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The main bedroom contains two original four plank doors and a late 19th century Art Nouveau style firegrate, along with two additional plank doors on this floor. The roof structure includes through purlins and collar braces, held together with original wooden pegs, and lacks a ridgepiece.
