Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage dating from around the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is built of painted stone rubble, with the rear, west end, and gable of the east end rebuilt in brick, primarily using a Flemish bond pattern. The steeply pitched thatched roof is now clad in corrugated iron, with the right-hand end half-hipped and the left-hand end incorporating a parapeted brick gable and a tumbling. A boarded eaves soffit and a cogged brick eaves course are visible at the rear. Brick axial and gable end stacks are present.

The original plan comprised two rooms and a through passage, with the larger left room heated by a large gable end fireplace and the right room by an axial stack backing onto the passage. The axial stack and through passage may have been added later. A small, single-storey wing was added to the rear, to the right of centre.

The asymmetrical north front features two windows. It contains 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars, and a 20th-century glazed and panelled door positioned to the right of centre. The right-hand half of the front wall is slightly advanced. A raking roof dormer on the left has a 19th-century, horizontally sliding sash window with glazing bars. The rear (south) elevation has a 20th-century casement window on the right, and a flat-roofed 20th-century wing on the left.

Inside the left-hand room, there is a chamfered axial beam with run-out stops, along with a large fireplace featuring a board and shelf above the lintel, and a niche to the left of the fireplace. The right-hand room has a chamfered axial beam without stops. The chambers and roof space have not been inspected.
