Description
The Old House is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, built in the early 18th century and 19th century. It features 18th-century red brick with lighter red brick dressings, as well as 19th-century gault brick. The rear wing has some exposed timber framing with red brick nogging. The house has plain tile roofs and is two storeys high with attics and a basement. A 19th-century addition created a double pile plan from the original L-plan. The façade has five symmetrical bays, a moulded brick cornice, and a swan-necked pediment above the original doorway, which contains a six-panelled door and a rectangular fanlight with patterned glazing bars. The hood is supported on modern brick jambs and features soffit panels and a dentil cornice. There are four ground floor twelve-paned hung sash windows with key blocks above flat gauged brick arches, and five similar windows on the first floor. The gables have tumbled brick parapets with end stacks and a dentil and moulded brick eaves cornice. The interior details are from the 19th century, and the original ground floor plan includes a hall and parlour that were partitioned for a 19th-century staircase hall. The farmhouse was previously known as Chantry Farmhouse and is said to have been constructed with 6,000 bricks sourced from Scarborough.
