Description

These flats, now known as Surrenden Dering, were built in the 18th century as the stables and coachhouse for the nearby Surrenden Dering mansion. They are located to the north of the mansion's former site. The buildings are now subdivided into individual flats and form an L-shaped block; the south arm was originally the stables and the east arm the coachhouse. They are constructed of red brick with a hipped tiled roof and a modillion eaves cornice. The windows are Dering windows, featuring round-headed arches with brick detailing above, including keyblocks at the corners and centre. The central part of the former stables has a tall, round-headed carriage archway that passes through the building, with a pediment above on each side. There are also two elliptical-headed doorways with fanlights of three lights, leading to doors of nine fielded panels. Two small lead cupolas are positioned above the roof. Ground floor additions were made to the west. The interior includes the date 1856, likely marking the insertion of the loose boxes. The coachhouse has a similar archway in its centre, with a shaped Dutch gable above, incorporating a clock face and a small wooden cupola topped with a weather vane. To either side of the archway are two coachhouses with double doors of twelve panels, and two windows above on the first floor. The courtyard is paved with stone.
