Description

Cherry Orchard Cottage is a house, largely dating from 1691, though it incorporates elements of an earlier structure and was altered in the mid-20th century. The house is timber framed with exposed sections, painted brick, and a ragstone base. The rear is tile hung. Extensions, one in timber applied to brick, have been added. The roof is tiled, with a hipped design, gablets, and stacks positioned centrally to the left, at the end to the right, and projecting forward to the left end. A hipped extension is present to the left. Two jettied gables are visible; the one to the right was built in the mid-20th century. A further extension, also from the 20th century, is on the right. Windows are wooden casements with leaded lights, with several on the gable floors, and three more on the ground floor. A boarded door is located in a gabled, half-timbered porch at the centre left. A datestone on a stack reads "S M L 1691". Inside, a pyramidal stepped stack features an inglenook fireplace, interrupting earlier timber framing. The floors have bracing and rest on the stack, supported by reused, chamfered timbers. The full framing is visible, and the roof has been renewed. Due to the quality of the 1691 and 1930s additions and restoration work, it’s difficult to determine how much of the timber is original, or whether the building is from the 17th century or an earlier structure substantially altered in 1691.
