Description
The Hall is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier and was rebuilt in the early 18th century. It features a timber frame clad with red and blue brick, accented with red brick dressings, and has a plain tiled roof. The building stands two storeys high with an attic and basement, resting on a plinth made of red brick and ragstone. It has a hipped roof with a paired modillion eaves cornice, two gabled dormers, and two stacks on the left end. The front has a regular arrangement of five glazing bar sash windows on the first floor, four on the ground floor, and four in the basement, all set in segmentally headed surrounds. The central entrance door consists of six raised and fielded panels, with the top two being glazed, and is topped by a keyed semi-circular fanlight. The doorcase features engaged Tuscan columns, a triglyph frieze, and an open pediment, which is a late 20th-century restoration.
The rear wings of the house, while styled similarly and using comparable materials, were built at a different time. These wings create an enclosed court and are constructed with 17th-century brickwork, featuring a casement window and a trap-door. Inside, the roof area is reported to be arranged in cubicles, possibly for smuggled goods, or because the house served as a convalescent home for victims of the London plaque, according to Igglesden in 1913. The interior is heavily timbered and ornamented, showcasing a fine early 18th-century dog leg and half-landing stair with barley-sugar turned balusters on an open string, a moulded rail, and dado panelling.
