Description

Kemps Hall is a manor house dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, with 19th and 20th-century additions. The entrance front is a 17th-century timber frame, now clad in 19th-century red brick, featuring a hipped roof and a stack to the left. It has a regular fenestration of three windows, with a 19th-century margin light sash window on the first floor. A 20th-century porch sits between two 20th-century bay windows at ground floor level. Internally, this wing appears to be a late 17th-century lobby-entry configuration, added to an earlier close-studded structure which forms the right-hand bay. This earlier section is now covered by a single roof and a regular 19th-century facade which originally had two projecting wings, now demolished. The right side elevation is timber-framed and brick-clad with a plain tile roof, sitting on a brick and ragstone plinth with a plat band. It has a hipped roof and two end stacks. The left-hand bay is roofed by the higher roof of the entrance front. A 16th-century stair newell is exposed in the garret of this bay, indicating a different construction date than the rest of the facade. Rear elevations date to the 18th and 19th centuries and include a mid-19th-century weather-boarded schoolhouse with a plain tile roof and four windows.
