Description

The Elms is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century, with early and late 19th-century alterations. It features a timber-frame structure with plaster infill, encased in flint with brick dressings, and has an old plain tile roof. The original 16th-century part of the building is oriented end-on to the road and consists of three bays, with a single storey and an attic. A 19th-century extension has been added to the rear, along with a two-storey block from the late 19th century on one side. The other side mainly features a 19th-century outshot, but the road-facing side reveals two bays of the original structure. This side includes an early 19th-century six-flush panel door at the road end, a small window next to it, and a wide six-pane camber-headed sash window adjacent. Above this, and in the third bay of the original 16th-century building, there are early 19th-century gabled dormers with either casement or sash windows. There is a stack located above the inner end of the road bay of the original building. Inside, much of the timber-frame is exposed.
