Description
The Southgate Hotel, located at 14 Southgate Street, was built in 1833 and is a notable example of early 18th-century architecture. The building features three storeys and a basement, with red brick walls and a moulded brick cornice beneath the parapet. It has five windows with segmental heads and flush wooden frames. The central first-floor window is distinguished by moulded and cut brick Tuscan pilasters and a bowed rudiment. The entrance is marked by a rusticated doorway with a portico supported by wooden Doric columns and pilasters, topped with a fanlight above a six-panel door with flush panels. The rear elevation also has three storeys and features bands, five windows—some of which are blank—and original sashes in elliptical heads. A central Roman Doric porch leads to a glazed door. The parapet includes a band, and the roof is not visible. Additionally, there is a north extension built in 1935 that is two storeys high, constructed of brick and designed in the same style as the hotel. The buildings numbered 2 to 14 (even) form a group. A rainwater head on the property is dated 1715.
