Description

This monument, dating from 1800, is located 1 metre north of a drinking fountain on Station Hill in Curdridge. It consists of a sloping stone slab that features an inset cast metal sheet with raised lettering. The inscription states, "This stone is erected to Perpetuate a Most Cruel Murder Committed on the Body of Thomas Webb a Poor Inhabitant of Swanmore on the 11 February 1800 by John Diggins a Private Soldier in the Talbot Fencibles whose remains are Gibbeted on the Adjoining Common."
