Description

Elderfield is a house that dates from the early 18th century and has been extended and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was home to the author Charlotte Yonge in the 19th century. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick with an old plain tile roof and a lead roof. It is two stories tall with an attic and features a three-bay early 18th-century design. A wing has been added to the rear on the right to create a garden front, and an additional wing has been added to the side of that wing, forming a 'U'-shaped layout. In the 20th century, the courtyard was filled in with a flat lead roof, and extensions were built, set back to the left of the original house.

The front facing the road has three early 20th-century stained glass two-light casements, along with three sash windows on the first floor and a panelled parapet above. There are external end stacks. The garden front, which has three bays and is two stories high, features a gable end on the left side of the original house. In the center, there is a top-glazed door beneath a pent-roofed porch, with two-light casements with segmental heads on each side. On the first floor to the left, there is a five-light casement and a small sash window in the center, while the right bay is blank. The roof is half-hipped to the right, with the gable of the rear wing cutting through the ridge to the left.
