Description
Waltham Fisheries is a house and shop located on the west side of High Street in Bishops Waltham. This building dates back to the 15th century, featuring a timber-framed structure, with a 17th-century timber-framed rear wing, and 18th-century extensions and improvements, along with some late 19th-century features. The front walls are made of brickwork in Flemish bond, with rubbed flat arches and stone cills. The south side displays heavy framing with a jetty and dragon beam, while the rear part has an exposed frame with brick infill. The rear wall is brick with cambered openings and brick dentil eaves. The roof is tiled, with hips and a gablet, and a half-hip on the lower rear wing. The oldest section, which has jettied north and south sides, suggests it was once an isolated structure, possibly a market house, now concealed by the attached brick wall at the front. The lower rear wing appears to be part of a larger timber-framed structure, now ending as an outshot. The east front elevation is two storeys high with three windows, featuring sashes with narrow side panes. There is a plain central house door, while the south side has a late 19th-century shopfront. Inside, much of the interior is from the 18th century, including a fully panelled room with an arched niche cupboard, a hallway arch, and doors with architraves.
